After searching a while I found out that the [[mw:Extension:Popups]] implements [[w:Page Previews]] (SSFWIKI has this now), but the gadget that implements [[w:Wikipedia:Tools/Navigation popups]] is a different thing. Got some expert help in irc as Reedy said that

so I'm going to look into pursuing a similar popup system as Wikipedia has. There are some advantages with [[w:Wikipedia:Tools/Navigation popups]] e.g. renders more prettily, popups contain clickable links, popups contain quick access links to wiki editing functionality.
