• Harvest Protecting President Zelenskyy against deep fakes a 2022 preprint at arxiv.org by Matyáš Boháček of Johannes Kepler Gymnasium and w:Hany Farid for the essential and interesting previous work in it. I saw enough to know that these guys are liquid gold in the science-hottness meter.
• Renaming and rescoping Help against appearance and voice theft. Hopefully a brother in Jesus will come over and help me out in the near future with this and various other questions
• wikidata:Wikidata:WikiProject Human rights/organization/human rights organizations is a great place to spot human rights organizations. The list is updated by a bot from Wikidata.

IN PROGRESS

• WP Wiki Tooltip Wordpress plugin by Nico Danneberg that provides tooltips from wiki into Wordpress was installed. It seems to work fine and it possibility to fetch tooltips from multiple wikis. Need to redo the links the Wordpress https://stop-synthetic-filth.org/wp/ with WP Wiki Tooltip. They need a lot of fixing after the recent changes to article names and new articles.

EVALUATING

• mw:Extension:MediaWikiChat could be an useful thing to add to this wiki. Its release status is listed as "stable".

• Considering mw:Extension:Cargo and mw:Extension:Page Forms for structured data in-wiki in SSFWIKI. Other alternative would be mw:Wikibase. Yaron Koren, who wrote Cargo, also wrote the 'Working with MediaWiki book at workingwithmediawiki.com. In the book the relevant parts are found in Chapter 16 - Cargo and Semantic MediaWiki and Chapter 17 - Page Forms.

• For Wordpress moving away from Polylang to automatic translation with GTranslate. Whether GTranslate would play along nicely with WP Wiki Tooltip and RDP Wiki Embed remains to be discovered. Maybe set up a staging Wordpress just to test this out. There is an another Wordpress translator plugin called 'Google Language Translator' with very high reviews, but it has been purchased by the company behind Gtranslate, and remains to see if the plan to phase out that.

• RDP Wiki Embed Wordpress plugin by Robert D Payne at wordpress.org allows embedding (with reformatting possible) of mw:MediaWiki articles into Wordpress. See e.g. https://stop-synthetic-filth.org/wp/2021/12/a-disarming-weapon-against-synthetic-filth-by-facepinpoint-com-existed-from-2017-to-2021/ for how it works.

Found an answer to the question "Why mw:MediaWiki:Mobile.js is no longer displayed to users of the mobile interface?". And the answer is that the MediaWiki developers moved that to mw:MediaWiki:Minerva.js, probably in 1.43. So fixed the situation and also did some housekeeping on the Minerva.js.

Took a snapshot of the system disk and installed mw:Extension:EmbedVideo (fork) to replace the unmaintained original extension. Taking a new snapshot

Friday 2025-01-24

• Upgraded from legacy LTS 1.39.11 to new LTS 1.43. Made backups and imaged the system disk. Problems encountered:
  • mw:Extension:OATHAuth did not seem to apply its schema changes, or perhaps the schema changes should have been performed in an earlier upgrade. Found workaround of manually running mediawiki/extensions/OATHAuth/sql/mysql/tables-generated.sql in mw:Topic:Yakailc03f0u43c0
  • On ssfwiki:Main Page the mw:Extension:EmbedVideo seems abandoned and was not compatible with 1.43. Noticed there is a fork of it that seems actively maintained mw:Extension:EmbedVideo (fork).
  • On ciumd:Main Page - Consumerium.org development wiki had two stray entries with null values where an article name should have been in its database, but this issue was resolved with knowledgeable and compassionate help from the good people at #mediawiki. Found the rows with 'SELECT * FROM pagelinks WHERE pl_title = '';. The error I got from MediaWiki update.php when "Running migrateLinksTable.php on pagelinks..." and doing "Populating the pl_target_id column": "Wikimedia\Assert\ParameterAssertionException from line 72 of [...]/mediawiki/vendor/wikimedia/assert/src/Assert.php: Bad value for parameter $title: should not be empty unless namespace is main"

• Upgraded to newest version of legacy LTS: 1.39.11. Made backups of this state and imaged the system disk. No problems encountered.

• Making and verifying backups and taking snapshot in preparation of two-phase upgrade from MediaWiki 1.39.10 via 1.39.11 to the new LTS 1.43
